Education

Education and journalism share similarities as impactful, collaborative and creative professions that provide a public service. To me, teaching is storytelling, and storytelling is teaching. I have worked as an educator since I was a teenager, when I first taught language arts at my mother’s Title I elementary school. I am a proud alum of AmeriCorps VISTA and Rollins College. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Communication Studies and double minors in Art History and Political Science.

BERLIN CAPITAL PROGRAM

Joined fellow U.S. journalists to take a closer look at the German media landscape and gain a deeper awareness of European society and transatlantic issues. The week-long fellowship included discussions and workshops with German politicians, educators, and journalists around topics of immigration, disinformation, and extremism.

ROLLINS COLLEGE

I did student-faculty collaborative research with Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Eren Tatari. I transcribed interviews, spirituality workshops, and edited scholarly article submissions for Tatari’s research on religious minorities in the U.S and Muslims in western politics. A scholarly article that I assisted with was published in the European Journal of Economic and Political Studies. Additionally, I worked at the Office of International Programs as a work study, tutored fellow students as a writing consultant, and was a teaching assistant for a Latin American politics course. Outside of campus, I was a refugee youth mentor for Catholic Charities, where I provided English tutoring and organized cultural field trips for high school students.

SPANISH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

As a Auxiliar de Conversación (or language assistant), I coached over 80+ Spanish students on English language learning, cross-cultural communication, and test prep. For two years, I taught English at a bilingual primary school in Arganda del Rey, a small town outside of Madrid.

AMERICORPS VISTA

VISTA is the national service program that works to eliminate poverty and partners with nonprofits and government agencies across the U.S. After graduating from university, I dedicated a year of national service at International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Phoenix, Arizona. My role helped adult refugees acquire basic skills for living in the U.S. by coordinating classes for culture orientation, employment, health and English. I developed an interactive online map to connect clients with free and affordable English classes. I piloted new curriculum for cultural orientation and reproductive health classes. In addition to IRC, I did service work with Humane Borders and refilled water stations in the Sonoran Desert for migrants making the perilous journey to the U.S. on foot.
